Reconciliation
A report that will not go out until your books tie to the cent
Most reporting tools report whatever your accounting system says. Big4CFO checks it first. If the books do not tie, you do not get a report built on wrong figures — you get told what to fix.
The check every month must pass
- Every transaction in the month must account for the change in each balance your accounting system reports for bank, card, receivable and payable accounts
- Bank and card accounts: zero tolerance — any difference holds the report
- An account on your balance sheet we cannot identify always holds the report: we cannot verify what we cannot identify
- A month with no transactions, or data pulled before the month ended, is held rather than reported as a quiet month
Tied to the bank’s own statement
Where the bank-statement check is switched on — and always on the plan that runs on uploads — each bank and card account is also tied to the bank’s own statement. Your book balance, less the items you list as not yet on the statement, must equal the statement’s closing balance to the cent. Next month, every item you listed must reach the bank. An entry that never clears is exactly where a mistaken or invented entry hides.
Honest about scope
The report says exactly which accounts were tied. Accounts we cannot independently verify — fixed assets, equity, anything the accounting system posts internally — are shown as your accounting system states them, and labelled that way. The claim is never wider than the check.
Questions
- What happens when my books do not tie?
- The report is held and you receive an email saying which account is out, by how much, and what to look at. Once it is fixed, the report goes out.
- Is this an audit?
- No. It is a reconciliation check run by software every month. It is not an audit, review or assurance engagement, and the report says so.
