Sample report

See exactly what a monthly report contains

Nest & Co Advisory is an illustrative business with made-up figures. Its May report was produced by the same software that produces every customer’s report, page for page, on the same rules.

Download the PDF and the Excel workbook below, then read on for what each part is and why it is there.

Page one: is my business okay right now?

The report opens with the question every owner asks and answers it from your own figures, in one sentence. Then five short answers, each with its own page: am I making money, where is money leaking, how much more could I make, will I run out of cash, and does the business own more than it owes. Then the three things to do first. Read only page one and you know the month.

The pages after it give the detail: each item worth your attention with the figures that raised it and what is worth checking, and, plainly, what the month cannot tell you — for example, that no cost of sales is recorded, so gross margin is not meaningful. Saying what we cannot see is what makes the rest credible.

Find the leaks

Money leaving the business that may not need to, and money owed that has not arrived. Every item shows the transactions behind it: the top three in the report, every one in your workbook.

  • Possible duplicate payments: the same amount paid twice within three days
  • Supplier charges that rose three months in a row
  • Bank fees, charges and interest over the last twelve months
  • Invoices past their due date, and bills you are late on

Unlock the profit

What each lever is worth on your own figures: 1% on your prices, 1% off your costs, 10% off your largest cost, being paid ten days sooner, and the sales you need each month to cover every cost. Arithmetic, not advice — you know which levers your customers and suppliers will bear.

Build the dream

What the business can already afford: the monthly surplus, how many months of costs your cash would pay, the cushion you have or still need, and your own goals measured against your books every month.

The statements

The reconciliation sits on the cash page and says exactly which accounts tied to the cent. The full profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow statement, every account, are in the Excel workbook, each figure marked with the evidence it has: verified to source, as stated by your accounting system, or estimated.

Questions

Is the sample a real customer?
No. Nest & Co Advisory and its figures are illustrative. The report itself is produced by the same software, on the same rules, as every customer report.
Does every plan get every section?
Every monthly plan gets the leaks, the profit levers, goals, the key figures, the 13-week and 12-month forecasts, the three statements and, each quarter, a board pack. Budget against actual, scenarios, product margins and customer retention come with Growth and above; debt tracking with Leverage; the partnership waterfall with Capital Stack.
